Man of steel

by Patsyfox on October 22, 2009

Working into the wee hours as I do, there are times I admit when the drawings speak to me.  Or is that the cognac?  No it’s definitely the drawings.  Other times, in the very wee hours, they move around on & above the page.  Or is that the valium?  In any case, I don’t think it would be a good idea for me to have any of my drawings cut into steel at life size and placed around the house.  Before long I’d be burying bodies in the backyard and saying the drawing made me do it.

Frank Malerba doesn’t seem to have this problem – he’s had many of his fabulous drawings transformed into life-size standing figures, made of steel.  Drawn in steel as his current exhibition at Jackman Gallery in St Kilda is rightly called.  Frank is one of those artists whose work looks like it comes as easily out of their fingers as sneezing, and aren’t I just not jealous of that.  Not.

So let’s just say drawing the person whose drawings I so admire didn’t quite equate in relaxation levels to a G&T in the hammock.
