For the Creative Fashion Illustration workshop back in May, I decided to rally behind the forgotten medium of pastels – you know, the soft chalky ones whose dust covers every surface in the room, including you? Those ones. I’ve noticed that illustrators like the wonderful Bil Donovan in New York regularly use them (Bil combines them with his beautiful coloured ink work), and Mats Gustafson’s work from the 1980s used them in a clean and bold manner. They are versatile! They are perfect for make-up and beauty illustration, and they combine beautifully with other media such as ink and collage – which is exactly what we did in the workshop – we treated Gigi Hadid to a new look…
