A silhouette I wouldn’t normally draw, a medium I don’t normally use. Geez, if I keep this up I’ll end up doing housework or something. Oh I make myself laugh.

One of the finest aspects of being a grown-up is being able to say “yes” to yourself all the time. Another drink? Yes! Want to stay up stupid-late and watch more episodes of True Blood? YES! Since you can’t decide between those three pairs of fabulous Preston Zly shoes would you like to buy all three? Absofreakinlutely!! And that’s how I came to walk out of The Signet Bureau with not one, or two, but three pairs of incredibly beautiful shoes. It’s. That. Easy. When you’re me.
Possibly because pastels rob me of the thing I love most in drawing – line – but more likely just because I’m bone lazy and will do anything short of ending my life to avoid cleaning tricky messes, I rarely use them.
Until recently when I was following one of the many golden tips gifted to me by the fabulous Bil, and deliberately worked with media I wouldn’t normally use…Enter the crumbling fuzzy mess that is chalky pastels. But this time I mixed them with one of my favourites, black indian ink, and made a Drawing Salon session out of it. I like the contrast of the hard and the soft, and I like the feeling of living on the edge. Well, sort of.

And throw in the challenge of a black ground to keep you on your toes…

I like nothing more than a lazy blog post, and with the pace of this year not slowing down but accelerating, expect more of them. Enter yesterday’s demo drawing – a combo focus of mens fashion illustration and the joyful play of colour you get when working with coloured inks and pencils in a random and non-sensical way. I think there’s something to this careless, meant-to-throw-in-the-bin approach to drawing!
What’s inspiring the joy? Well besides everything, perhaps it’s the brand new digs of The Patsyfox Drawing Salon, now calling the splendiferous premises of Frankie and Swiss home! You would have thought that the buzzfest that was this year’s LMFF would have calmed down by now, but no – The fabulous Bil Donovan has left me still buzzing after 3 weeks, and I hear from many of the Masterclass participants that I’m not the only one…
Sadly we had to turn away twice as many people as we could actually accommodate in this wonderful 2-day Masterclass held at the beautiful Abbotsford Convent, with the generous help of Illustrators Australia and Neil’s Art Store. If you’re one of the people who missed out, or are now kicking yourself you didn’t have a shot, then don’t fear – I’m already working on the next ones! Mail me to get your name on the contact list…

I may have made a few comments recently about entering some sort of rehab phase/reducing the booze/saying no to fried finger food/etc. Pffft, if you believed any of it then you really don’t know me at all.
The first 3 months of this year have done nothing if not earned me a giant slack-fest, so as I head north to Mum’s couch, be sure that my bags are packed with a year’s supply of wine and easter eggs. Even better, a birdy tells me that Mum has not forgotten her lesson of a couple of Easter’s ago, has dutifully ignored my claims to being sugar-free, and has a decent pile of pretty eggs waiting for me. Bless.
Happy Easter everyone, and remember: Life is short so eat the damn egg!
Being picked up this morning by the LMFF car and chauffeured to the airport where I waited like a puppy at the international arrivals door to pick up Bil Donovan. Sitting in the back of said car looking through Bil’s travel sketchbook at his ridiculously beautiful sketches of his travels (highlight? Paris of course!) while pointing out the sites of Melbourne en route to his hotel. Telling him how crazily booked out his Masterclass is next weekend, planning a trip together to my favourite art store, and dinner tonight at one of my favourite Melbourne joints. Finding out the above pic, currently on show at the Metro Gallery “Lisa Barron 30 Years – Art in Fashion” exhibition has sold. All these things make for very, very good times.
And so will the coming week of LMFF events which will be something of a re-tox after this recent stint of sobriety-inducing overwork…

Seems I have gold on my mind this week, though with the craziness of my work schedule, it’s felt more like yellow fever.
But now finally I’ve reached the golden light at the end of the tunnel – no less than 4 artworks have been delivered to Metro Gallery for Tuesday’s LMFF opening bash (official gallery opening Saturday 16th March 1pm – 4pm), and the car is packed and ready to rock at 5.45am tomorrow morning and head west to Golden Plains. A weekend of hard core chillaxing and fabulous music is indeed like winning the gold trophy. The only question left to answer is – could it really rain as predicted, and be 33 degrees? Talk about rain on the Golden Plain…

For anyone wondering why I’d be missing the first hour of the Pimp my M.U.F. opening tonight – i.e. an hour’s worth of drinking and socialising, it’s because I’ll be doing the very same thing at another venue, with a whole other set of my work on display. Ah, to be in demand…
The lovely Cheryl Lin of Business Chic has been living out her Little Black Dress Project for the last year, and is celebrating its conclusion with an exhibition at Melbourne Central, as part of LMFF. Not only that – she has also turned it into a book with the help of a Pozible campaign. And what’s a book without illustrations, right? Enter…ME! The exhibition will feature poster-size prints of some of my illustrations, to be sold at a later date.
The only question is how I’m going to get from Melbourne Central to Bar 303 in zero seconds. Watch this space…
