To say there are 2 sides to my personality is to overly simplify the situation. There are several.
Mostly though, the battle is between the 2 dominant sides: Nighttime Patsyfox vs Morning Patsyfox.
And they hate each other.
Take tonight for example – it was through the sheer iron will of Morning Patsyfox that I resisted just one more drink at just one other venue to take my Sunday night to 2 rocking bands, and dragged myself onto the 112 tram and safely home. After all, what am I – Unemployed? A full-time freelancer?? Alas, it was a sad journey home with the 2 sides hissing at each other. Morning PF was right though – I will kiss her arse in the morning.
Thank god for next weekend and some truly mischievous plans. Bring it.

This triplex life is of mine is driving me to drink.

Now, I’m completely aware of the importance of boundaries, and god knows there are certain times when I rather like them (cough). But lately the diary is getting a little…well…crowded. Not that I don’t like it. For a change it’s as packed with pleasure as pain.
Just sayin’ is all.

I don’t want to seem picky or anything, but is it so much to ask not to get water-logged on my summer holiday? I didn’t think so either.
I did my fair share of going sans-umbrella, but really – what’s the point of carrying my new favourite hair-appliance-that-looks-like-a-sex-toy (you try explaining to the airport security guy why you removed the tong-bit off your curling wand), if you’re going to go out and have soggy flat hair in under 10 minutes? Correct, there is none.
Fortunately for me, I have a healthy appetite for indoor activities. I gave my credit card the thwacking of its life, and filled every unused space in my brain with images from the plethora of exhibitions I managed to squeezed into such a short time. When I want to be, I am a machine.
Take my last day in London prior to flying home – Wake with the hangover from my luscious birthday dinner at the Connaught Hotel courtesy of Paul & Laurent, at which Paul and I, like the Sue-Ellens we are, drank ourselves quite literally under the table. In no time we were on the tube to the V&A to take in The Cult of Beauty, and the Yohji Yamamoto exhibition. Brilliant. Next, onto the viewing at Christies where we built an internal layer cake of champagne, ice cream, frittata, coffee, and fruit juice, then onto the last but most incredible exhibition of the trip – Egon Schiele Women at the Richard Nagy gallery. Sigh.
Just some of the tasty treats, beginning with the Tracey Emin retrospective at the Hayward Gallery in London…

Ah, Egon….

As much as I love the Paris metro, it robs you of the glorious views. So I walk…And I walk…And inbetween, I pause for some feet up.
A rest was most desperately needed after this most incredible Madame Gres exhibition held at the
sculpture gallery Musee Bourdelle. Amazing.

Paris at last!
Despite the odds (Being told at check-in that my ex-boyfriend was still booked in the seat beside me; Spending the first leg of the flight boxed in between two Russian men in head-to-toe nylon tracksuits – B.O. as W.M.Ds; No less than three babies in the row ahead of me), I arrived well rested.
For this I thank my canny lobbying of the Qantas staff at Singapore airport to secure me a new aisle seat, my own little haven with no screaming babies, no B.O., and apparently a window dweller with no bladder because for that entire flight she did not move.
3 wines, 2.5 sleeping pills, & a sounds-of-the-rainforest-soundtrack later, there was no waking me.
I arrived at my Paris hotel smelly but awake, with just 2hrs before I was due to be photographed by Carla Coulson (a story for later), and way earlier than check-in time. Karma I love you, because standing there behind the desk was the stern-but-lovely woman who used to stand behind the desk of the much-nicer work-funded hotel. Voila! Like that I was in my upgraded room, showered, face-masked within an inch of my life, & en route to Carla’s.
I’ll write more about the gorgeous Carla Coulson another time but suffice to say not only is she gorgeous, talented, and cool, she also has the patience of a saint, because if you ever watched Friends and saw the episode where Monica tries to get a portrait taken with Chandler, then you’ll have some idea how difficult it was for Carla to get a natural photo of me. That woman deserves a medal. Sigh.
Back to my beloved Saint Germaine Des Pres. Why am I always so surprised to return to places across the world and find they’re not only still there but still the same? Paris is nothing if not consistent.
LOVES IT.
“View from my hotel window.”

“The never-changing view from cafe Les Deux Magots.”

“The blissful sight at the end of day 1.”

Was I a little uptight this morning to read Qantas had cancelled all flights until the stinking volcanic ash kindly departs our airspace? Seeing how I take off for Paris tomorrow ‘n all? God yes! Seriously, as if the day before I fly around the world isn’t stressful enough (Finish 7 design illustrations; Mow the lawns; Organise insurance; Empty the kitty litter; Admit to Mum I’m actually going away – check check check check check), let’s throw in an element of gee-maybe-you-won’t-be-going-anywhere-anyway.
The one positive should my arse not be on that flight is that I’d be able to attend the opening of the Illustrators Australia A3 show this Friday night 17th June, where I will proudly have 2 prints hanging on the wall. You can check out all the prints online, or come for a good look and tipple in person. Professional gallery-quality prints of the many and varied artworks can be purchased for the barganza price of $125. You can probably even purchase on line. Nothing not to love about that.
But back to me. Or actually, back to my pre-flight checklist which seems only to be growing, much like the contents of my suitcase. Oh god I hate packing! Pas de panique – breathe…..

With the best possible outcome of a lousy situation (understatement), and the impending beginning of a new phase of creative output, the only words I can find to describe how I’m feeling are relief, and reload.
Relief, because that’s all I can truly feel about the verdict of guilt for 3 counts of culpable driving for the driver who wiped out Tex and Suzanne. And reload, because with all that’s happened, and tomorrow’s return to the design world, I’ve been laying low, taking care of business, and recharging my batteries big time.
Ah, the decadence of relaxation…

If you happen to be reading Epicure in today’s Age newspaper while sipping on a latte, then take a moment to admire the handiwork of one Patsyfox on the front cover.
I may or may not have drawn myself into it and included my cheetah boots, but I admit nothing!

If it wasn’t for an ultimately unnecessary trip to Bunnings on Saturday, I would have completed a hat trick this weekend – 3 consecutive nights spent indoors without leaving the house. Pyjama marathon anyone? What I learned about myself is that I approach this like an Olympic sport and seek to skip every last ritual that makes us socially acceptable human beings – if I can get a brush through my hair tomorrow morning then I will be genuinely disappointed.
But this wasn’t a result of slothdome – cabin fever would have nipped that in the bud – this was a duel focus of a) kicking a cold to the curb, and b) Making the Monday morning deadline of producing some 17 illustrations. True. Tick, and tick.
A true weekend of multi achievements.
